March, 2008 Art Society profile: The Federation of Canadian Artists |
We have in the past profiled artists' associations in Nova Scotia and Ontario. The Federation of Canadian Artists is an organization in western Canada with chapters throughout British Columbia and Alberta. With nearly 2000 members mostly in western Canada but some from as far away as Toronto and Australia, the FCA is the premier organization for artists in the west of Canada. The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to the promotion and professional development of artists, and services for art collectors. It was established in 1941 with André Biéler as its first president. Other leaders have included Group of Seven painter, Lawren Harris. Dedicated to its aim of gradually raising the artists' standards by stimulating participants to greater heights of achievement, they opened what is believed to be the first completely artist-sponsored gallery-workshop-studio in Canada. The FCA is funded through membership dues, its education program, painting and other retail sales, and foundation grants as well as corporate and member donations. Please visit our web site at www.artists.ca for more interesting details about our organization and to view more of the inspiring art created by our artists.
The FCA provides many services including a wonderful exhibition space located on Granville Island in Vancouver BC, an on-line gallery www.federationgallery.ca, variety of educational courses and tools, a bi-monthly magazine Art Avenue as well as an opportunity to achieve several levels of membership where the artists get to be recognized and supported by their peers. Although the FCA headquarters are located in Vancouver BC, Chapters associated with the Federation have formed across British Columbia and Alberta. Federation Gallery hosts wide variety of exhibitions every year which are made up of members' work, occasionally partners with other groups of artists to create collaborative shows and for the last five years has organized an open, international prize exhibition Painting On The Edge. This show isopen to artists from all over the world and makes available over $8000 in prizes. It truly is our open door to the arts community. The prospectus is available on FCA web site and the entry deadline for this years' show is June 5, 2008. Our Active members may apply for advancement to Signature membership status determined annually by an jury of FCA Senior members. Our Signature membership includes some very prominent contemporary Canadian artists who generously dedicate their time and effort to accomplish the mission of our organization.
The Federation of Canadian Artists has been thriving for 65 years, with a big thanks to it's wonderful talented membership, staff and volunteers, as well as the supporting community of art lovers. Federation Gallery and the FCA's administrative office are located at 1241 Cartwright St, Vancouver, BC, V6H 4B7.
