The 2005 Entry Rules are available Here as an Adobe Acrobat download for reference.
We hosted the Graphic Design jury in our home over two weekends.

The first Saturday we invited a number of professors from Southern California Community Colleges and State Universities to review the 180 entries in these three categories and select a dozen finalists from each category of graphic design.

The second Saturday we hosted professors from art schools and leaders in private enterprise marketing and design to choose winners from among the finalists.

Each of these entries was judged on four criteria
1) Technical Skills
2) Creative Skills
3) Functionality and Appropriate use of Media
4) Overall Entry Quality
Tallies were added for each of these criteria and averaged. The highest average score indicating the placement.

The three to four winners in each of these categories can be seen HERE.

I wish to emphasize that these design pieces required all of the skills learned in the art class. Developing solutions to visual problems with appropriate composition, perspective and color was worth over 50% of the points awarded for each design piece while only 35% of the points was awarded based on skills associated with software and computer training.

Each of these students is training for a career in media arts, the success of these students in finding employment in that is satisfying in work and income can be assessed by reading about the success of students in computer animation at: http://www.cccewd.net/success_detail.cfm?l=63
The California Community College system is an important part of the engine that drives the 5th largest economy in the world. As you can see from the winning entries California Community College students create work that is professional and of high quality and the students have developed skills that will be refined in the university or art school that they are preparing for.
