Art Society profile:

2006 Cerritos College Student Art Exhibit

Cerritos College is one of California's 105 community colleges serving students a varied as California's population. Students gaining specific skills for employment, students taking college level classes at minimum cost while intending to transfer to four-year colleges and universities or simply students looking for and receiving a second chance in the competitive employment and educational worlds. The classes are equivalent to California State University's classes in content and challenge at a fraction of the cost.

The students in the art program at Cerritos would not fit anyone's pre-conceptions of art students, even though those pre-conceptions are wrong in any case. These students are from blue-collar working class families, many of the parents came to the reception in work uniforms, including FedEx delivery men and nurse's aids. So the artistic risk coming from these students and the pure experimental nature of their work is even more remarkable. These students press against the edges when one might expect a more commercial approach from young people brought up in economic insecurity.

The warmth and respect between students and professors in the Cerritos art program demonstrates the sincerity and close working relationships of all those involved.

Lastly, the Gallery Director, Andrea Bronté, did a tremendous job in the professional organization and installation of the work.
