Art Society profile:

Chicago Artists' Coalition

The Chicago Artists’ Coalition was founded in 1974 by artists wishing to address very specific issues still important to visual artists in many communities today:
• Self-employed artists lacked access to health insurance.
• Artists had no communication network, no means to focus the attention of the art community on issues of common concern.

The Coalition had an immediate and positive impact on the community, organizing artists in advocacy of increasing funds for public art projects and even in establishing an advocacy group that evolved into the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Chicago Artists’ Coalition provides a valuable service to the Chicago visual arts community, organizing exhibitions for the sale of artists’ work and acting as a promotional organization to develop recognition for the visual arts and artists in the national and international media. The CAC organizes and publicizes youth art exhibitions for the Chicago area. The organization also provides workshops and demonstrations in the visual arts for the community.
