History
Babette Roy and Don Selchow formed the North East Watercolor
Society in 1973 at a small bistro in Woodstock, New York under
the inspiration of internationally famous teacher and artist, John Pike,
whose students formed the nucleus of its charter membership. The first
formal meeting at Roy’s Warwick home included the fifteen charter
members who named the organization “The Orange County Watercolor
Society” and expressed as the aim of the organization the “Promotion
and Preservation of Watercolor Painting”.
The Orange County Watercolor Society first exhibited at the Trotting
Horse Museum, in Goshen, New York with an invitational show attended
by both Bogimir Bogdonovic, AWS and John Pike, NA, AWS, who made a rare
trip from his Woodstock studio to attend the opening reception.
Membership expanded with the introduction of the National Juried Show
in 1976 and, with revision of the by laws, the name of the organization
was changed to the North East Watercolor Society to
reflect the wide range of membership. The jurors and the demonstrators
at the annual juried shows read like a Who’s Who of watercolor
painting in the east. The annual October Juried Show attracts entries
from throughout the United States including many of the foremost American
watercolorists.
