December, 2005 Art Society profile: Art in Nova Scotia |
|||||
Nova Scotia has a tremendous community of artists and art organizations. The physical beauty of the landscapes and oceansides are sufficient motivation for placing brush to canvas and paper. The emphasis on landscape painting can be seen in our profile of the Dartmouth Visual Arts Society
Tourism is another strength of Nova Scotia that lends itself to the development of art and art organizations, as tourism brings consumers to a community for whom the purchase of art is the purchase of items that are tokens of the journey and of the many places visited. Here are original oil paintings in the visitor's center in Pictou, the place of the first Scottish emigration to Nova Scotia. These are examples of the kind of original tourist art of first rate quality available in Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia is also a very traditional place, its not at all uncommon to find communities with all-night communities dancing in the community center where during the day art classes are held. Church halls and community centers are commonly the center of activities for towns throughout the province, and often the centers offer art for purchase. There are numerous art societies through out the province, we are featuring the Dartmouth Visual Arts Society, to learn more about this group CLICK HERE. Other Nova Scotia arts organizations of interest include: Pictou County Artists' Association Halifax provided blank lobsters to many of the local artists for a public art project similar to that done with Cows in Chicago and Angels in Los Angeles, the artists responded to the opportunity with Lobsters whimsical and coloriful, the lobsters were placed along the Halifax waterfront.
