History
The Swampscott Arts Association was
founded in 1973 when a group of local artists decided to meet in the
Swampscott Public Library to create a charter membership, mission statement,
and venue in which their organization could foster and encourage the
arts. In 1997 a local community college, Marian Court College of Swampscott,
invited the art association to form an alliance, creating an official
home for the Swampscott Arts Association. The Swampscott Arts
Association has since evolved into an active, non juried organization,
membership being open to both artists and art patrons in local communities.
We hold 3 juried shows a year (Autumn, Winter, and Spring) and award
cash and ribbon prizes at each show. Our receptions are free and open
to the public and always well attended. We offer art demonstrations,
a weekly “plein air” painting group (seasonal), free to
our membership, along with an assortment of other special events. Every
May we award an art scholarship to the most deserving art student chosen
by the head of the department at the Swampscott High School. We also
donate artwork to support Marian Court College when they hold their
annual auction fundraiser. All these things have evolved with the primary
goal of our mission statement as the driving force, “to foster
and encourage the arts”, within our local community.

About Swampscott, Massachusetts
Swampscott is a small picturesque seaside community
north of Boston. It is home to one of the last remaining Victorian-style
railroad depots in the country. Many other interesting buildings of
historical value are situated in the town, including Marian Court, formerly
known as White Court, the summer residence of President Calvin A. Coolidge
and the Georgian Revival-style building that now serves as the Town
Hall, which was the former residence of Professor Elihu Thompson, founder
of the General Electric Company.
Swampscott's beaches, with their refreshing ocean breezes, attract visitors
of all ages during the hot summer months. Fisherman's Beach provides
a pleasant view of Swampscott Harbor with its many brightly colored
fishing and pleasure vessels. Swampscott's contributions to the fishing
industry are the inventions of the Swampscott Dory and the lobster pot;
both are used by fishermen world-wide.
