October, 2007 Art Society profile: San Diego Watercolor Society's 2007 Exhibition |
|
The 27th International Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society For October 2007 we are profiling the 27th annual exhbition of the San Diego Watercolor Society. The following work will reveal watercolors in new media, techniques and subject matter. As a result, these paintings have a dynamic presence in a variety of surfaces, source material, and individual expression. For the 27th "I Show" 90 paintings have been chosen from 744 submitted works representing 40 states and 6 countries. They embody just about every step in this journey. Juried by George James , the California artist who introduced ground breaking "Yupo" painting techniques, this show presents prime examples of creative, dynamic, and superb technical styles. These works span in style from "Photo Realism" and the "Wet into Wet" surfaces that suggest brightly impressionistic visions to nonobjective and abstractions emerging from mixed materials to create immediate impact. For a selection of the work on display: Click Here Artist Magazine says that the 32 year old non-profit, all volunteer San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) is one of the top watermedia organizations in the U.S. The original founders exemplified the adventurous spirit of California watercolor while maintaining the highest traditions of the medium. The current 750 plus members are encouraged to use all forms of water based media, including acrylics and mixed media, as long as they uphold strict standards of quality using the ever-growing resources available to watercolor artists. A growing number of SDWS members live out of the area, but wish to be associated with the society because it upholds the highest technical standards while opening the door to experimentation and exploration. San Diego Watercolor Association's mission is to be a recognized leader in expanding the appreciation of watermedia painting through member instruction, exhibition and community education in San Diego County. This year SDWS began a new cooperative educational effort with "Liberty School", a partnership between NTC Foundation and San Diego public schools, expanding educational opportunities to the school age public through docent-led tours and hands on instruction.
