Founded in 1964, the San Diego Watercolor Society is notable for a number of reasons; the SDWS is one of a handful of societies nation-wide that maintains and manages their own gallery and collection, the SDWS also sponsors an international competition of water-media work each year. In January 2007 the San Diego Watercolor Society moved
from the gallery located in San Diego's Little Italy to the newly renovated
NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. This master-planned development will
include many other artists' organization and societies and will allow
the SDWS to collaborate on events and exhibitions with other art societies.
SDWS conducts numerous professionally taught painting
workshops and informal sessions, monthly talks and painint demonstrations.
SDWS is involved in the local schools, supports many community activities
and art fairs and a local art contest for school children featuring
posters that support conservation efforts.This 750 member watercolor
