Founded in 1964, the San Diego Watercolor Society is notable for a number of reasons; the SDWS is one of a handful of societies nation-wide that maintains and manages their own gallery and collection, the SDWS also sponsors an international competition of water-media work each year.

In January 2007 the San Diego Watercolor Society moved from the gallery located in San Diego's Little Italy to the newly renovated NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. This master-planned development will include many other artists' organization and societies and will allow the SDWS to collaborate on events and exhibitions with other art societies.
The new home of the SDWS is in one of 26 historical buildings built in the Spanish Colonial Rivival-Style popular at the beginning of the 20th Century.

SDWS conducts numerous professionally taught painting workshops and informal sessions, monthly talks and painint demonstrations.
