Art Society profile:

San Luis Obispo Art Center

Located in the Misson Plaza of San Luis Obispo along a stream, the SLO Art Center is the premier venue for art on California central coast.

Operating as both a museum and a gallery, the SLO Art Center is one of 28 art galleries located in San Luis Obispo. However, as a museum the art center creates curated exhibits that are docent guided, providing an opportunity for a museum experieince for K-12 students from throughout the region.
Community outreach includes workshops, classes for children and teens, juried exhibitions and art lectures and presentations.
Currently (August '06), in addition to the permanent, members, exhibition, the Art Center has curated two exhibits: Diana Brenna's "Threads of Myths and History"

Treads of Myth and History is an exhibit of fabric art displayed on mannequins in a beautifully lit gallery, fabric and woven pieces in bright and arresting colors, mixed with elements of the natural world like wood and feathers, convey a sense of the mythic in reference to modern sensibilities of how a mythic world would appear new age rather than classical in the use of mythic archetypes.

The second curated exhibit is titled "The New Fauves", a collection of work from seven artists ranging from France to San Luis Obispo, these works call to mind the flat brushwork, distortions and bright colors of Henri Matisse and the other artists of the Salon d'Automne of 1905 Paris where the phrase "Fauves" was first used to describe this work, Fauves is French for "Wild Beasts", to view a selection of the work of these new wild beasts and a small selection of members work Click Here
