The Museums and Galleries of Mumbai, India

On the same street as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum, Mahatma Gandhi Road, is the Mumbai branch of The National Gallery of Modern Art.

The National Gallery of Modern Art is in a more urban enviornment with all of the aspects of a musuem found elsewhere in the world including art for sale on the street:

Bulletin boards advertising events and opportunities in the local art community:

The Museum is located in an old convention center, the tall ceilings of the center have allowed for one of the most interesting gallery set-ups, each gallery is stacked one upon another in a complete open wall-less space with stair ways leading up peraps seven levels of art. The artists featured are all Indian, and for a museum of modern art, unusual as there are no conceptual pieces. The work consists entirely of painting and sculpture. No photography is allowed in the museum so the following two pieces are examples of Indian modern art from the New Dehli branch:

Sankho Chaudhuri "Untitled"

Nandalal Bose "Shiva Drinking World Poison"

There is no gift store and no cafe in The National Gallery of Modern Art but the neighborhood is a bustling center of shopping and restaurants with many excellent eating establishments in the modern hotels throughout the area.
