Sweet SiameseRegister for the next Multimedia Event from Serendipity, October 17, 2010 ... Click HereJust North of the I10 freeway, in industrial downtown LA, an interactive, multimedia event like nothing we have ever seen… "Cameras don't work in the dreamstate…"So we were told by a bewitching elevator operator who seemed to enjoy exploring the boundaries of gender with her bifurcated gender-bending costume and makeup. The elevator was an enormous, ancient freight elevator in an industrial building on Central Street in a gritty, non-district of downtown Los Angeles. Artpoints was there because we were intrigued by an invitation promising to weave together music, performance, dance, video, art, and cuisine.
Entering the dreamstate, we found ourself in a carefully curated and meticulously crafted 3600 square foot environment named Madera Design created by a young women artists, Leila Fakouri.
We felt as if we had stepped inside a hallucinatory fantasy of life as it might have been. The gracious and elaborately costumed hostesses made us feel that we were entering a private sanctuary. Antique furniture and decorative items were carefully restored and sometimes transformed with a coat of bright red enamel. The gathering crowd was eclectic, some in costume and some in hipster-scene dress.
The space is divided into several rooms. The bedroom, painted a deep seductive maroon with a window looking out onto a large, brightly lit industrial yard filled with wooden palettes. This clearly was a woman’s boudoir, holding the promise of both seduction and sanctuary.
A charcoal artist worked in a back room and as the evening unfolded, performance, music and cuisine created a sense of enchantment. The intense focus on domestic environments, unabashed female sexuality and a love of costume showed the influence of feminist art without the need for an overt declaration. This event wove together many strands, including performance art, audience participation, nostalgia for an imagined past, a love of costume and an atmosphere of erotic possibility. Castle Builders Productions are availalbe to create full immersion experiences blending art, music, cuisine, and multimedia.
